Your Assignment

 2014 Senior Capstone Project

Breaking the Chains, Breaking the Silence

Your culminating project for this unit will be two-fold. You have to write a research argument essay and spearhead a community service project that is directly related to your essay. Both have specific guidelines, which are provided below.

Researched Argument Essay:

For this portion of the assignment, you will compose a research essay that presents an argument for a social injustice that we face in our community.  You may choose one we have studied this nine weeks: bullying, texting while driving, or poverty, or you may choose one we have not discussed. Further instructions and dates are listed in the pages that follow. Paper must be 4-6 typed pages using 12 point Times New Roman font, MLA heading and 1” margins.  Paper must include a minimum of 10 properly punctuated direct quotes and parenthetical internal documentation from each source and a Works Cited Page.  You must use at least five sources, such as articles, interviews, brochures, books,

Community Service Initiative:

For this portion of the assignment, you are expected to work as a class to organize, execute, and participate in a nationwide community service project. As a class, we will use the steps below to determine a project that we all feel will be benefit our community.

Community Service Project: Steps to Success.

  1. Go to www.dosomething.org
  2. Click on “Causes” on the top portion of the website.
  3. Choose from these categories (your category will depend on your paper topic): Bullying and Violence, Discrimination, Human Rights, Physical and Mental Health, or Homelessness and Poverty.
  4. Once you have entered the specific site for your cause, choose a specific area that you want to be the focus of your community service initiative.
  5. After you have done this, click on the “Act Now” Tab. This tab will provide you with a number of community service projects that you can initiate here on campus and in the community.

We are responsible for planning how we will implement this initiative in your school, community, or both. We must publicize the event around school and in our community to get people involved, we must set a date for the community service project, and we must take pictures and video clips that document our actual service.
